During this morning our sites had been offline for some hours (starting at approximately 7 am UTC+1). All of this started with an overload of our server that had forced us to reboot the machine. After that, we saw that most of the files were gone. So, we download our backups from S3 and restored them. However, the last backups weren’t correct and we had to use a backup from October.

How it will affect you? All the attached files in the forum since October/November are missing. So, if you have attached files in the forum you should upload them again.

Please, contact us if you see something inusual. We’re still recovering: <del>demo.osclass.org</del> and <del>download packages from geo.osclass.org/downloads</del> Sorry for the inconvenience, we are going to improve our backup system and recovery from this kind of failures.

Update 23 January 2011 16:36 (UTC+1): demo sites and geo.osclass.org/downloads are working fine again.

We strongly recommend to install this plugin once to fix some problems that some user might be experiencing when adding new items. Once it’s installed, you can uninstall and delete the files from the server because it won’t perform any changes more. In addition, this new version should fix the problems that some users have been experiencing when they updated their OSClass.

Most of the changes has been explained in the first RC post but in this post I’m going to add a longer explanation in the most important points:

Profiler page: now the registered users will have a profile page with the following information:

User information: name, address, location and website

Latest items

Form to contact the user

Price format: via the oc-admin, the administrator can set the number of decimals, the thousand separator and the decimal separator.

Full text search: it’s a search function supported by MySQL that will improve the actual search method. We’ll be able to sort by relevance but it’s not implemented yet.

More custom field types: there’s two new types of custom fields: select and radio button.

Notifications:

To the admin when a new user is registered

To the publisher when a new comment is added in an item of their own

Some changes are oriented to developers:

Debug options to show/log errors and queries.

New DAO (Database Access Object) to perform sql queries. We are going to publish a tutorial in the next days.

There have been more changes that are reflected in the changelog with all the bug fixes too.

The old plugins shouldn’t be affected by the DAO changes. However, we’re going to update the plugin during the next few days. The language packages aren’t updated yet but we’re going to notify all the translator once we update the backoffice. If you’re willing to help us too, sign up to the translation backoffice.

It’s very important to backup the database and the files before upgrading. It’s a precaution mesure because in this version we modify the engine of one table in order to add full text feature. Please, read the updating instructions before upgrading.

We don’t like bugs, neither you do. I’ve seen a post in jetpack blog talking about this and I’ve found really interesting. I’m going to reproduce here:

Here’s a great rule: if we can’t reproduce the bug, we can’t fix the bug.

When you report a bug to us, here’s what happens:

We read the bug report

One of us tries to reproduce the bug

If we can reproduce it, we investigate what’s broken and fix it

But if we can’t reproduce the bug…

Often bug reports don’t include enough information. Meaning we have go back and ask for details so we can investigate. If you want to increase the odds we fix an issue, and fix it fast, help us out.

A great bug report includes the following:

What were you trying to do?

What did you click on or do last?

What happened / what did you see?

What browser are you using?

What version of OSClass?

What hosting provider? (And if you know, what version of PHP do they use?)

The bug is reported to the right place:

OSClass

Plugins: Specify the plugin and the version

Themes: Specify the theme and the version

Bug reports that show screenshots for #3 are incredibly useful, as we can see exactly what you saw.

Bonus points for reviewing known issues before submitting, as your problem might already have been reported and have a patch or a workaround.

We work hard to have you deal with as few issues as possible, but if you want to improve the odds we can fix your issue fast, please take a extra minute to write a bug report that’s easier for us to use. Thanks.
